    Spatial Distribution of Economic Activities in Local Labour Market Areas: the Case of Italy

    In recent years, a large number of studies investigated the spatial distribution of economic activities in Western Europe by means of various measures of geographical concentration. The fundamental problem with the indices currently used in the literature is that they do not take explicitly into account the spatial structure of the data, and as a result the same degree of concentration is compatible with very different localization schemes. In the present work we present an analysis which combines the information provided by the standard measure of concentration of Ellison and Glaeser together with the measure of spatial correlation introduced by Moran. The problem known in geography as MAUP is here addressed by considering both administrative and functional regions in the empirical analyses. Data on employment and plant size for the years 1991 and 2001 are used to identify sectoral location patterns in Italy and The Netherlands within the manufacturing and service sectors.

    Existing indices measuring the spatial distribution of economic activity such as the Krugman Specialisation Index, the Hirschmann-Herfindahl index and the Ellison-Glaeser index typically do not take into account the spatial structure of the data. In this paper, we first consider traditional measures of geographical concentration, and subsequently extend the analysis to take spatial dependence into account. Using data for Italy for the years 1991 and 2001, we apply exploratory spatial data analysis to identify sectoral location patterns in both the manufacturing industry as well as in services. We find that large differences prevail in the geographical concentration of production across sectors. The results of the exploratory spatial data analysis reveal the existence of well- defined clusters of economic activities

    Learning in Collaborative Moments

    In this article, we describe experiences with dialogue evenings within a research collaboration on long-term care and dementia in the Netherlands. What started as a conventional process of ‘reporting back’ to interlocutors transformed over the course of two years into learning and knowing together. We argue that learning took place in three different articulations. First, participants learnt to expand their notion of knowledge. Second, they learnt to relate differently to each other and, therewith, to dementia. And third, participants learnt how to generate knowledge with each other. We further argue that these processes did not happen continuously, but in moments. We suggest that a framework of collaborative moments can be helpful for research projects that are not set up collaboratively from the start. Furthermore, we point to the work required to facilitate these moments.</jats:p

    High versus low dietary protein intake and bone health in older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    Protein may play a beneficial role in the prevention of bone loss and in slowing down osteoporosis. The effect of dietary protein may be different in older adults compared to younger adults, since this population has a greater need for protein. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate the impact of a dietary protein intake above the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of 0.8 g/kg body weight/day from any source on Bone Mineral Density (BMD)/Bone Mineral Content (BMC), bone turnover markers, and fracture risk in older adults compared to a lower dietary protein intake. A systematic search was conducted through October 2018 in 3 databases: CENTRAL, MEDLINE, and EMBASE. We included all prospective cohort studies and Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) among adults aged ≥65 years that examined the relation between protein intake on bone health outcomes. Two investigators independently conducted abstract and full-text screenings, data extractions, and risk of bias assessments. Authors were contacted for missing data. After screening of 523 records, twelve cohort studies and one RCT were included. Qualitative evaluation showed a positive trend between higher protein intakes and higher femoral neck and total hip BMD. Meta-analysis of four cohort studies showed that higher protein intakes resulted in a significant decrease in hip fractures (pooled hazard ratio: 0.89; 95% confidence interval: 0.84, 0.94). This systematic review supports that a protein intake above the current RDA may reduce hip fracture risk and may play a beneficial role in BMD maintenance and loss in older adults

    A Scoping Review on Shoulder Injuries of Wheelchair Tennis Players:Potential Risk-Factors and Musculoskeletal Adaptations

    Wheelchair tennis players are prone to develop shoulder injuries, due to the combination of wheelchair propulsion, overhead activities and daily wheelchair activities. A methodical literature search was conducted to identify articles on shoulder complaints in wheelchair tennis, wheelchair sports and tennis. The aims were to identify (1) type of shoulder complaints; (2) possible risk factors for the development of shoulder injuries; (3) musculoskeletal adaptations in the shoulder joint in wheelchair tennis players. Fifteen papers were included in this review, five on wheelchair tennis, three on wheelchair sports and seven on tennis. Type of shoulder complaints were acromioclavicular pathology, osteoarthritic changes, joint effusion and rotator cuff tears. Possible risk factors for the development of shoulder injuries in wheelchair tennis are overhead movements, repetitive activation of the anterior muscle chain and internal rotators, as well as a higher spinal cord injury level. Muscular imbalance with higher values for the internal rotators, increase in external range of motion, decrease in internal range of motion and reduced total arc of motion were the most common proposed musculoskeletal adaptations due to an unbalanced load. These presented risk factors and musculoskeletal adaptations might help researchers, coaches and wheelchair tennis players to prevent shoulder injuries

    Increased incidence of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy in women with a history of spontaneous preterm birth:A longitudinal linked national cohort study

    Objective: Determine the risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HD) in women with a history of spontaneous preterm birth (SPTB). Study design: Longitudinal linked national cohort study within the Dutch Perinatal Registry (1999–2009) on linked data among 349,291 women with a first and second singleton pregnancy in the Netherlands. Main outcome measures: The incidence of HD, small for gestational age (SGA) and placental abruption in the second pregnancy. Results: Out of 349,291 women with a singleton first pregnancy, 19,991 (5.7%) had a SPTB. The incidence of HD in the second pregnancy was 8.1% in women with a previous SPTB, as compared to 5.6% in women with a previous term birth (aOR 1.49 (CI 1.41–1.57)). Also after excluding HD, SGA and/or placental abruption in the first pregnancy, women with a history of SPTB had a higher risk of HD in their second pregnancy compared to women with a previous term birth (4.6% versus 2.7%, aOR 1.77 (CI 1.64–191)). Similarly, the incidence of SGA and placental abruption was higher in the second pregnancy in women with a history of SPTB compared to term birth in the first pregnancy. Conclusions: Women with a history of SPTB are at elevated risk of HD in the subsequent pregnancy. These results support shared pathophysiology between SPTB and HD
